Centralized Solar Wireless Traffic Light Synchronization System (SICESSIS)

In the project, the hardware and firmware necessary to operate a wireless solar traffic light were developed following current applicable regulations. The traffic light obtained can establish communication with other (similar) traffic lights through a secure communications protocol which dictates, in conjunction with the exact time taken from a GPS module (Global Positioning System), the program sequence to be executed to perform vehicle flow control according to previously programmed routines.

Description

In addition to the wireless synchronization strategy, the developed traffic light is designed to operate in a self-sustainable way with renewable energy generated through photovoltaic panels, however, it maintains compatibility with the traditional traffic light model to be operated by supplying energy from the power grid. The continuation project proposes the design and development of a traffic control platform that allows knowing at every moment the state of each traffic light that is part of the system. In case of detecting any problem, the central will alert the person in charge of maintenance. The platform allows you to modify the configuration according to time zones, peak hours, weekends and holidays. It has an autonomous light controller (traffic light), and a control, and monitoring centre, which together operate through a secure communications protocol. Once configured, each traffic light operates independently of the central system. Therefore, the platform allows us to manage and synchronize the traffic lights of a city in an efficient, simple and safe way through the implementation of traffic management algorithms that feed variables such as date, time, among others for the operation of the system. Its installation significantly improves traffic flows by reducing the undesirable effects generated by the increase in vehicle traffic. It is designed as an innovative solution that helps cities significantly reduce the congestion of their streets while allowing them to save thanks to the low costs of implementation, maintenance, and energy consumption. This system will make use of existing communication technologies with Web services; The traffic light can function as a single system capable of coordinating the traffic logistics of a crossing that can be scalable to several nodes, which form a network that coordinates the logistics of a region or city. This system helps the gradual incorporation of traffic technology.

The project also includes the continuous road flow service for emergency services of public health and safety institutions such as ambulances, firefighters, police, civil protection, army, among others, that have an application that monitors their location at the time of transit (via GPS) and set a destination location, then the centralized system based on its position and speed adjusts the traffic lights to move along the route without the need to stop and perform traffic management safely (avoiding accidents for not attending traffic signalling), impacting the mobility of services and reducing the accident rate due to collisions.
